Princes Risborough a Potted Guide: Princes Risborough is a smallish market town situated in the county of Buckinghamshire (Bucks), England, it is placed around 8 miles to the north-west of High Wycombe and roughly 9 miles south of Aylesbury. In the 2011 census, Princes Risborough had 8,101 residents (a rise on the 2001 figure of 7,978). The town lays at the foot of the beautiful Chiltern Hills and can be reached by way of the A4010 which runs between West Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville.

When the Domesday Book was written in 1086, the town was called Risborough and was a royal manor (previously held by King Harold). Its name "Risborough" comes from the old English meaning roughly "scrub covered hills" or "brushwood covered hills". The name was changed to Princes Risborough when the manor was held by the Black Prince (Edward) in 1344. This area was obviously populated long before this and in all probability evolved as a stop for those travelling between the River Thames and the Icknield Way, with it lying conveniently in a broad opening in the Chiltern Hills.

Princes Risborough became a market town in 1523 after it was issued a royal charter by King Henry VIII, this enabled it to put on a market each (held on Thursdays) and two annual fairs (still held at present in October and May).

Princes Risborough today is a bustling little town, though the centre and High Street area has been somewhat quieter since the building of the "by-pass" New Road in 1987.
